A24’s upcoming Anthony Bourdain biopic, Tony, has earned a rare Rotten Tomatoes score. The movie, based on a book by the late American celebrity chef and television documentarian, has gained exceptional reviews after a limited early screening.
At the time of this article’s publication, Tony has a 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score with 27 reviews.
The movie is directed by Matt Johnson, popularly known for Hulu’s Nirvanna the Band the Show. The official synopsis “follows a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain as he travels to Provincetown and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen, setting off a transformative summer before fame found him that forever changes his future, purpose, and passion.”
The movie starsDominic Sessa,popularly known for Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. The ensemble includes Emilia Jones, Dagmara Domińczyk, Rich Sommer, Stavros Halkias, Leo Woodall, and Antonio Banderas.

On Rotten Tomatoes, critics are praising the actor’s performance as an angry young man. Moreover, they also commended Johnson’s work in the movie.

For instance, Laura Clifford wrote on Reeling Reviews, “Sessa’s take on the nineteen-year-old Bourdain is of an angry young man with a chip on his shoulder, someone overly confident in his abilities needing to be knocked down a few pegs, yet with an undeniable, surly charm and the curiosity that would propel him forward.”
Collider‘s Aidan Kelley added, “It’s crass, it’s loud, it’s messy, and yet, you end up with something profound, beautiful, and exciting on your plate.”
Many reviewers also commended the fictional story of “one screwed-up kid’s transformative summer” as “fresh, intoxicating, profound and deeply resonant; this heartfelt dramedy is a must-see.”
These reviews poured in from the critics who attended the limited screenings. The biopic will open again on August 7 in a limited release in selected theaters before expanding nationwide on August 21, 2026.
