Taylor opened up about her hair struggles during season 3 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.
After experiencing issues such as hair loss while getting her hair done by fellow cast member and hairstylist Jessi Ngatikaura, Taylor decided to seek out a stylist who was better trained to care for Black hair.
During a November appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, Taylor said the experience had "a big impact on me emotionally."
"I grew up in a predominantly white area and it's kind of all I saw growing up and that's what I thought was normal," she explained. "Honestly, being a little girl, I feel like that's for a long time what I thought beauty was: straight hair, fair skin. It's taken a lot of self-work and healing to be able to get to the point that I'm comfortable acknowledging my Black side."
She continued, "It's not that I wasn't proud of it, it's just, you know, being a little girl, you do what makes you feel safe and what makes you feel included and welcomed. So, for a long time I just did what was safe and it's taken a long time to get to this point now that I want to experiment with different things and try different hairstyles and go to people that can properly handle my hair."

Taylor added that Ngatikaura "does an amazing job" but that she "couldn't really ignore anymore" some of the hair issues she was having.
"I was like, 'Okay, I'm going to go to somebody that can properly braid my hair down and know what to do with it,' and it's been amazing for me," she recalled. "My hair has been thriving ever since."
In a TikTok shared on Nov. 16, Ngatikaura shared that Taylor's new hairstylist, Lacorey Robin, visited her Utah salon to teach her of her some techniques.
"I’m always committed to growing and learning and being the most inclusive I can be," Ngatikaura wrote in the caption. " ... It was so great to have an open and honest discussion about how ethnic hair is done. I’m committed to making sure @JZ Academy is implementing more education with these practices as well."
She concluded, "Thank you to @Layla Taylor for being brave in sharing your story ❤️"
