Sofia Mattsson tells PEOPLE her Days of Our Lives character is “very complex and interesting”
The actress promises “fun, exciting storylines and drama” as she joins the long-running soap opera
Mattsson also admits she was “a bit nervous” making the jump after her longtime role on General Hospital
Sofia Mattsson is stepping into a new chapter and teasing plenty of drama ahead.
Less than a year after exiting her longtime role on General Hospital, the actress is set to join Days of Our Lives in 2027 and she says her new character is already shaping up to be a compelling addition to Salem. Mattsson announced the news on Monday, March 30 in a joint Instagram post with the official Days of Our Lives account.
“The role is very complex and interesting and I also just love working in daytime,” Mattsson, 34, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “It’s such a fun challenge as an actress since it’s so incredibly fast paced and always very high stakes circumstances.”
Still, making the jump to a new soap wasn’t without its challenges.
“I was a bit nervous for sure," Mattsson adds of moving from General Hospital to Days of Our Lives. “But having been on General Hospital helped ease a lot of worries, as I’m already very familiar with the concept and structure of a daytime show.”

As for what viewers can expect when she makes her debut, Mattsson hints at "lots of fun exciting storylines and drama." The experience of joining the legendary series has also been a highlight so far, she says.
“It’s been wonderful,” Mattsson says. “Everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. It’s a really happy vibe. And the talent is amazing, both cast and crew.”
And for the Swedish-born actress, the opportunity feels especially meaningful. “It’s an honor and so exciting!” she says. “It’s so cool to be around some of the longest working actors and actresses in TV and to be part of such a legendary show.”
She adds, “I used to watch the show growing up in Sweden and back then I could’ve never in my wildest dream imagined that one day I’d be living in the US, working on that very show!"

In Mattsson's casting announcement, the post noted that she's "making her way to Salem early next year," alongside a photo of the actress posing next to her name on a dressing room door. Fans quickly flooded the comments with excitement, with one writing, “Wooohooo! Welcome Sophia,” while another added, “Sasha is missed on GH but Days secured a good one.”
“I already felt like I had a daytime family at General Hospital and I’m feeling so grateful to expand that family to now include the whole Days of Our Lives team as well,” Mattsson says.
Mattsson’s casting comes after her emotional exit from General Hospital in July following eight years as Sasha Gilmore, who was later revealed to be the secret daughter of Holly Sutton (Emma Samms) and Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers, who died in August 2025). In her final episode, Sasha left Port Charles to protect her newborn daughter, Daisy, whom she shares with Michael Corinthos (Rory Gibson). At the time, the actress confirmed her departure on social media while hinting it might not be goodbye forever.
“Yes, it’s true, Sasha Gilmore has left Port Charles! (For now ),” she wrote. General Hospital has become my second home these past years and I am so grateful for my time there.”
“I’d have to see what the role was, but I’m definitely not opposed to coming back to the soap world,” she told TV Insider. “I think being on a soap is one of the best jobs you can have as an actress.”

“And I feel so lucky to have experienced the love and support all the wonderful GH fans have to give — you guys truly are THE BEST!,” she added. “I hope Sasha will make her way back to her friends and family, but for now it’s time for her to take a break from all the drama, and for me to continue my acting journey in some new exciting projects!”
