War is no longer on the horizon — it’s knocking on the front door. There’s an official battle, a backwoods kerfuffle, and some amorous activity on the side. Plus, a dead man walks, while another man may never walk again. Welcome to the wonder that is *Outlander*.

How fun is it that Buck (Graham McTavish) is everyone’s favorite? Sure, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) haven’t told him that they killed his parents once upon a time, but that’s neither here nor there. He’s good with kids! He plays frontier prairie games! And he has a voice that is so stern, the bairns run inside the minute he tells them to when he hears twigs snapping in the woods.

Knowing that there’s no way another cast member would be eaten by a bear, it’s no surprise when Mr. Whitaker makes his way through the brush with his hands raised. He’s got some bad news: Captain Cunningham (Kieran Bew) is coming for Jamie.

Jamie learns that Cunningham is going to attack him and hand him over to a Redcoat officer named Patrick Ferguson to be hanged. This will happen in a few days. Cunningham is waiting for a colleague to arrive with a militia of his own before overpowering Jamie and taking over the Ridge.

Claire is hot when she learns of Cunningham’s plan, and again when Jamie puzzles it out that Cunningham will more than likely attack at the Lodge. Buck suggests they take advantage of this news and preemptively kill Cunningham. Jamie disagrees. He wants to know which of his tenants is working with Cunningham. The only way to know is to go to the Lodge, with his own men, and figure it out.

That’s the easy part. The more concerning news is this random militia coming in to help Cunningham. He’s got to cut those jokers off before they get to the Ridge. And he’s going to have to make a deal with the devil to stop that nonsense from happening.

The next thing we know, Josiah is rushing off on horseback with a letter. We have no idea where he’s going. One can only assume it’s hell if the devil is the target.

Back in the city, William (Charles Vandervaart) walks in on Bree (Sophie Skelton) painting Amarantha (Carla Woodcock) and the baby. Kudos to Bree for all that artistic talent!

Amarantha leaves to feed the baby, giving Bree and William some sibling bonding time. When asked whether he ever got to know Jamie, William says his father once helped him look for someone. William’s face falls when Bree inquires if that person was Jane.

Bree informs her brother that she didn’t know Jamie was her father until she was 19 years old. She already had a father she loved, but it made it worse that Frank was dead when she finally met Jamie. William nods as she shares that everyone in her life lied to her, including her mother. When William asks how she overcame the feeling, Bree tells him that she simply got to know her father. The rest is history.

Later, William lets Bree know that the battle has begun and the road into town is closed. If Roger (Richard Rankin) hasn’t returned now, it’s going to be a while before he does. Then he wonders what took Roger out of town?

Because she shared such a sweet moment with him before, she only half lies to William. She says that Roger is at the Continental camp (true) to minister to the men there, which is technically a lie that later turns out to be true!

We see Bree’s husband befriending a little drummer boy and promising him that everything will be okay before marching off to battle. Roger then helps a man named Winslow through his final breaths, assuring Winslow that he is not alone. Once Winslow passes away, Roger frantically looks around through dust and explosions, and spies the boy passed out with his drum.

Roger snatches the boy up and runs through the chaos toward the infirmary. He lays him on a cot and begs the doctor to help his young friend, who has been shot through the neck. All *Outlander* fans rejoice when Dr. Denzell Hunter (Joey Phillips) attempts to save the child’s life.

Roger begs Denzell to intervene, saying he promised the boy he would be okay because God is with them. Denzell fully recognizes this faith and calmly tells Roger that God is with him. Feeling confident in his decision to leave the boy with Denzell, Roger heads back out into battle and is thrown backward from another explosion.

The scene changes to Bree, pacing in front of a window. She’s done waiting around for news. She’s going to the camp to find her husband and sharply turns to William, readying herself for an argument. William simply tells her that he will accompany her to the camp at first light. This is why we love William.

Back at the Ridge, Jamie puts on his best kilt as he prepares to go to the Lodge. He’s got a plan, he’s got his trusted men, and he knows it’s going to be a hard night. But he doesn’t plan on dying.

Claire reminds him that plans change. The irony is not lost on her when Captain Cunningham’s mother (Frances Tomelty) shows up to pray with Claire for her son and Claire’s husband. It’s a good thing whiskey was on hand, because that was so very awkward.

As Jamie leads the Lodge meeting, Cunningham interrupts to share a few words about loyalty. Jamie interrupts the captain’s monologue and speaks about never being brought under English rule and the importance of fighting for freedom. Then he asks someone to share the final prayer, and as all heads are bowed, Jamie slips out the side door.

Cunningham is angry. He shouts for a few men to scour the woods to find Jamie. Now we have a list of men who are not on Jamie’s side, and an entirely different battle brewing in the woods.

Jamie eventually runs into Cunningham, and they break into a fight. Even though Cunningham stabs Jamie with a knife in the shoulder and chokes him with a rope, Jamie is able to recover and land a few powerful punches that cause Cunningham to stumble to the ground... right where his pistol lies. It’s Jamie’s knife against Cunningham’s bullets.

Cunningham claims Ferguson will take Jamie alive or dead. And as he raises his gun to shoot Jamie, a shot rings out, and Cunningham goes down. Is this the devil we’ve been waiting for? Is this who Josiah rode through the night to find? Who could it be?

It’s Buck. Not who you were expecting, right? I still don’t know who the devil is, but there’s too much going on now to think about it, because Buck didn’t actually kill Cunningham. He more or less paralyzed the man from the waist down. And now Claire has to save him while his mother watches her closely.

Do you know who else is watching closely? Amarantha. She’s watching William like she wants to devour him. She eases into the seduction with more beetle talk, but William is tired of her games and wants to know, for real, if they should get married. Was she kidding about giving their future son his title?

Amarantha is all for the marriage thing and is also all for procreating. As in, she’s good to go right now. Who needs to be married when you can practice, and if that results in a baby, so be it. I mean, if you’re getting married anyway, who cares?

William shows her exactly how excited he is about this arrangement. While making out hardcore, he says they will get married. And Amarantha accepts, then straddles him right there in the gazebo.

Do we trust her? I have no idea at this point.

The next morning, Roger finishes up a memorial ceremony for a dozen soldiers and sees Bree. He hobbles to her, and she flings her body into his arms, grateful her husband is alive. Then she punches him dead in the face for scaring her. This is why we love Bree.

Roger explains that he couldn’t leave the camp and then introduces her to Dr. Denzell. Bree looks intrigued by the name, and it all comes together when William embraces the good doctor. Everyone is on the same page! It’s Rachel’s (Izzy Meikle-Small) brother!

William decides to stay a while with Denzell to catch up. He waits outside a tent as Denzell hands a list of casualties to an officer. That’s when William’s face lights up. The officer dismisses Denzell to speak with ā€œan old friendā€ and invites William into his tent.

William crushes his cousin Ben (Alex Bhat) in a bear hug. Slowly, William’s eyes grow wide as he realizes what he did the night before with this man’s wife. And like his fiery sister, William punches his cousin dead in the face for being a punk.

Back on the Ridge, Jamie and Claire rush outside when one of Jamie’s men warns that someone is coming. A dozen men on horses arrive, and we see Josiah in the front. He apologizes for being late and nods toward a man.

The man who hates Tories. The man who is forming his own militia on Fraser’s Ridge. The man who one day will fight in a big battle that takes place on King’s Mountain.

Benjamin Cleveland (Turlough Convery), the devil himself, has come to save the day.
