Need a reason to grab a slice? You may receive a deal in the coming days as it's National Pizza Week.
No one knows how National Pizza Week, which runs Sunday, Jan. 11, to Saturday, Jan. 17, came to be, according to the National Day Calendar.
However, pizza itself has a rich history, evolving from ancient Mediterranean flatbreads into what most consider pizza in 18th-century Naples, according to History.com. Immigrants brought pizza to the United States, where it gained popularity in the early 20th century.
Pizza's popularity remains high, although it has slipped down the lists of America's favorite foods if you use spending at the biggest U.S. food chains as a barometer. Pizza, which had been No. 2 behind burgers in the '90s, has fallen behind sandwiches, coffee cafés, chicken and Mexican dishes over the past two decades, according to research firm Technomic.
Grocery prices: Milk, butter and cheese prices are down. Here's why.
Consumer spending at the largest U.S. pizza chains totaled an estimated $30.9 billion in 2025, while burger chains surpassed $110 billion in 2025, according to Technomic.
"Pizza chain sales have remained essentially flat the last two years and have trailed well behind the rate of restaurant price inflation, which has risen by around +4% during that timeframe," Kevin Schimpf, senior director of industry research at Technomic, told USA TODAY.
Sliding consumer confidence has also led to some changes in pizza orders. Customers have begun ordering smaller-sized pizzas and with fewer toppings, according to Slice, an online food ordering platform for independent pizzerias. The average price of pizza is $17, up 22% over the last five years, Slice told NBC's "Today Show" last month.
Some pizza places offer specials over National Pizza Week that may save you some dough. Don't forget to check with your local pizzerias, as they could also have available deals.

For a limited time – available now and beyond National Pizza Week – Pizza Hut is offering its 16-inch Big New Yorker pizza for $10. To promote the special, Pizza Hut enlisted seven-time Super Bowl champion and future NFL Hall of Famer Tom Brady in a TV spot, which shows him embarking on a second career as a Pizza Hut deliveryman so he can continue saying "hut," even though his quarterbacking days are behind him.
Football fans should listen up during upcoming games because Pizza Hut is also challenging a quarterback to say "pizza" before "hut" in a nationally televised game to win their city a free Big New Yorker pizza party.

There's also a special Weeklong Carryout Deal for one-topping pizzas or an 8-piece order of wings for $7.99 each.
