Naomi Watts is trying to break the stigma of menopause, even with her kids.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the CNBC Changemakers Summit in New York City on Thursday, April 16, the actress, who is a longtime activist for women's perimenopausal and menopausal health, shared whether her kids educate their friends about the topic like their mom.

"I don't know if it goes that far with the kids," admits Watts, who shares son Sasha, 18, and daughter Kai, 17, with ex Liev Schreiber. "I mean, I do remember the first time one of my kids saw lube in the bedroom, and they were like, 'What?' And I said, 'Yes, yes, you know, by the way, lube is sold at Urban Outfitters now.' And they're like, 'No way, no way!'"

"And I said, 'Yeah, it's a real thing.' So, yeah, the stigma is definitely reducing," she adds.

In a panel earlier that day with moderator Julie Boorstin and Warner Bros. co-chair and CEO Pam Abdy, Watts shared how some of her initial conversations about menopause went with her kids.

"I said, 'Do you know what menopause is?' Because they'd heard me on the phone many times say the word," she began. "And one of them said, 'Isn't it when you wet the bed, Mom?' Because they'd crawled into bed and I'd had night sweats, and not really wet the bed, but, yes, the bed was wet."

"One even said, 'Isn't it when old ladies die?' And look at that. I mean, why doesn't the education start as early as sex ed in sixth grade? It's just part of the story," she added.

Watt's passion for the topic led her to found Stripes Beauty, a holistic beauty company for aging women, and she's frequently in the discussion about women's health online.

The actress first began experiencing perimenopausal symptoms directly after the birth of her second child.

"I was trying to start a family at 36, and I was told that I was close to menopause, so that was a shocking discovery," Watts previously told PEOPLE. "I felt lonely and panicked and completely unprepared. I managed to navigate getting pregnant not once, but twice, and then went into serious, kind of hardcore, symptoms."

Beginning her menopause journey in her late 30s came as a surprise to Watts, but she soon discovered that showing symptoms on the earlier side ran in her family.

"The first time I got that piece of news from my doctor, I called my mom immediately and I did remember that she had said she had menopause early," said Watts. "I said, 'Why didn't you tell me before?' And she said, 'Well, these were the conversations I never had with you because my mother never had them with me.' "

These days, it's no longer a taboo topic; in fact, Watts and her friends are talking about menopause "all the time."

"With my girlfriends now, the conversation is that they know I'm like the 'menopause lady," Watts added with a laugh.
