The USGA and NBC have come up with a new way to take fans inside the ropes and up close to the action. Debuting at Shinnecock Hills at the 2026 U.S. Open will be microphone-equipped caddie bibs.

Golf fans had a great time when the in-round, live walk-and-talk segments first appeared a couple of years ago and this just might be the next thing that gets fans jazzed.

NBC Sports is in the midst of 175 hours of coverage of the 126th Open, including 31 hours of live championship coverage starting Thursday. The network will have 90 cameras in use around the facility and now, with special caddie big mics, they'll have a new toy at their disposal.

It's always a treat when a field mic picks up a good Jordan Spieth-Michael Greller conversation. Here's hoping we get a couple of juicy ones over the next four days.
