- *Law & Order: Organized Crime* has been canceled after five seasons.
- The spinoff series debuted on NBC in 2021, with Christopher Meloni reviving the hotheaded detective he played on the first 12 seasons of *Law & Order: SVU*.
- The Mariska Hargitay-led *SVU* will be back in the fall for its 28th season.
Christopher Meloni's Elliot Stabler has gone undercover for his final investigation. *Law & Order: Organized Crime* has been officially canceled after five seasons, while its predecessor *Law & Order: Special Victims Unit* will return for season 28, ** has confirmed.
The news may not come as a surprise for *L&O* fans, coming nearly a year after *Organized Crime*'s most recent fifth season concluded its run on Peacock in June 2025.
The spinoff series debuted on NBC in 2021, with Meloni reviving the hotheaded detective he played on the first 12 seasons of *SVU* before it was revealed, in the premiere of season 13 in 2011, that Stabler had retired and relocated his family to Italy. It was an exit that Meloni later described to ** as abrupt and unceremonious.
However, in a 2020 interview with the *New York Post*, the actor made it clear there was no drama behind the scenes. “How I left was a different issue and had nothing to do with the *Law & Order* people, the *SVU* people or with [creator] Dick Wolf,” Meloni told the outlet. “I left with zero animosity, but I did leave clearly and open-eyed in going forward and finding new adventures."

Stabler returned with a season 22 *SVU* appearance and a starring role on the new spinoff, bringing with him a new cast of characters as an ace team of special agents working to bring down New York's most dangerous organized crime syndicates. In total, the series aired 75 episodes with Meloni starring alongside Ainsley Seiger, Danielle Moné Truitt, and Rick Gonazlez.
Throughout its run, *Organized Crime* welcomed a fair share of figures from Stabler's past from *SVU*, including Tamara Tunie's Medical Examiner Melinda Warner and Kelli Giddish's Sergeant Amanda Rollins. One-time *Law & Order: Criminal Intent* star Michael Biehn appeared on a season 3 episode of *Organized Crime *as David Carver, Stabler's former marine buddy who gets caught up in a violent biker gang feud.

And of course, the series saw more than a few appearances from Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson, bringing together the beloved duo of the righteously furious marine-turned-detective and his empathic, yet pragmatic, forever-partner for one of the most enduring, hotly-contested will-they-won't-theys in television history.

But Meloni won't be offscreen for long; he'll return to the small screen as the lead on Dan Fogelman’s upcoming NFL drama for Hulu, *The Land*. Meloni will play Danny, the head coach of an NFL team, with costars Mandy Moore, who starred in Fogelman’s other hit, *This Is Us*, as well as William H. Macy, Chace Crawford, Chloe Bennet, Sam Corlett, Tanner Zagarino, Bridget Moynahan, and Benjamin Bratt, per Deadline.
On the other hand, NBC confirmed that the second half of *SVU*'s two-season renewal announced last May will premiere for the 2025-26 TV season. Michele Fazekas, who joined last season as SVU‘s first female showrunner, is expected to continue in the role.
For fans who are hoping this doesn't mean the end of Stabler's appearances on *SVU*, keep hope alive. Maybe this means Stabler and Benson will finally be able to smooch in the future!
Deadline was the first to report the news.
