The *NSYNC star shared which ’90s trend he’s glad made a comeback — and also the one thing from the decade that needs to stay in the past
“I think the '90s were amazing. It was such a melting pot of a decade,” he said
Lance Bass is reminiscing about the '90s.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the *NSYNC star, 46, reflected on the colorful decade and the trends he's down to revisit — or leave firmly in the past. Bass shared that, looking back on the ’90s more than 25 years later, he has a new perspective, at least when it comes to the style of that time.
"It's so funny, because living in the '90s, I always thought the fashion was horrible. I just remember [thinking], 'Really? This is what we're doing?' Even then, I was like, 'This does not feel good,' " he said.
"Everything was so oversized and all that, but now it's so funny that that style is back, and I actually appreciate it more now," he continued. "I'm like, 'Okay, maybe that was kinda cool.' Yeah, I've learned to appreciate the '90s fashion, especially now, so I'm glad that's back."

While Bass has fond memories of the '90s — "I think the '90s were amazing. It was such a melting pot of a decade," he said — not every trend should be resurrected, in his humble opinion.
"I appreciated a lot of things, but there's some things that probably don't need to come back. I was never one of those Tamagotchi people. I never Tama-got-it. I just thought it was the dumbest thing," he said of the popular digital pets from Japanese toy brand Bandai. "I know they tried bringing that back, and it failed. Yeah, that can stay back in that decade."

"It was so dumb," he added of the Tamagotchi concept. "I'm like, 'Okay, this thing just makes noise. It's always hungry. Goodbye.' "

Clothes and gadgets are not the only things making a comeback from the '90s. *NSYNC returned to the top of the global music charts last year, thanks to their hit "Bye Bye Bye" being featured on the Deadpool & Wolverine movie soundtrack. Twenty-four years after its release, the catchy song blew up again — and broke into the Top 10 of Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. chart in August 2024.
But Bass told PEOPLE there is actually a different track from *NSYNC's album No Strings Attached that he would love to see have its moment in the spotlight.
"The one I think that gets overlooked is a song called It Makes Me Ill. That was my favorite from No Strings Attached," he said, explaining, "I think it was such a great, fun song. I definitely fought for that to be a single, but we had other songs. We had some bangers from that album, so it was hard to pick a single."
Further tapping into some '90s nostalgia, Bass has partnered with Bath & Body Works for their Semi-Annual Sale, which kicked off on Friday, Dec. 26. The singer revealed to PEOPLE that he was first introduced to the brand by his '90s girlfriend.
"Since the '90s, I've loved ... this is how old I am, I would always get my girlfriend the pear-smelling, the fragrance sprays and all that," Bass said. "That always reminds me of my girlfriend in the '90s. That always holds a special memory for me."

He told PEOPLE that the brand remains a staple for him all these years later.
"I mean, I literally have a cabinet full of all of my favorite things, from the moisturizers to the fragrances to the candles, of course," he said. "The plug-ins are big at our house ... I definitely stock up on all the candles. Lots of hand sanitizer."
