Sydney influencer Gian Carlo Zapata was hospitalized and placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks after suffering severe burns in an "explosion" at his apartment
His friend Lex Novak shared details of Zapata's condition on a GoFundMe page created to support his recovery
Zapata later told followers he had opened his eyes after two weeks in a coma and was grateful to be alive
Gian Carlo Zapata, a Sydney, Australia-based influencer, was hospitalized and put into a medically induced coma for two weeks after sustaining severe burns following an "explosion" in his apartment.Zapata's friend Lex Novak confirmed the news of Zapata's injuries in a GoFundMe page created to help ease his recovery process. "Our dear friend Gian suffered a devastating accident that left him with serious burns to his body. Due to the severity of his injuries, he is currently in the ICU in an induced coma while the doctors provide the critical care he needs," Novak wrote on the page, which was created on May 31."As you can imagine, this has been an incredibly traumatic and uncertain time for Gian, his family, and everyone who loves him," she continued. "While his focus will be on fighting through the days, week's and months of recovery ahead, the financial burden of this accident will continue to grow."

Zapata returned to his Instagram to share an update on his health on Sunday, June 14, writing in white text over a black screen:"I recently had an accident where there was an explosion in my apartment and my entire body was on fire for few seconds. I ended opening up in a coma for two weeks, but I finally opened my eyes two days today.""I am so incredibly overwhelmed by all the love, messages and support I've been receiving," he added. "Thank you all from the bottom of my heart, I am genuinely so grateful to be alive."

Donations collected through the GoFundMe page will go toward Zapata's essential living expenses while he is out of work, including rent, medical costs not covered by insurance, and other unforeseen costs that arise in his recovery process.On Wednesday, June 17, Zapata took to his Instagram Stories again, posting a photo of the burns on his face (which he said he edited, so they didn't look "insane"), to tell followers he had been cleared to leave the hospital this upcoming Friday.
Per his Instagram bio, Zapata is also the founder of Gaze Marketing Agency.
