It’s been a long four years since the second season of Sam Levinson’s Euphoria. I don’t know about you, but I can hardly remember the major events of that season. Clearly, based on the trailer for the forthcoming third season alone, a lot has changed after a massive time jump. For one, they’re not in high school anymore. Euphoria has made such a significant impact on pop culture, from the cast catapulting to Oscar-nominated fame, to the memes and Labrinth’s memorable score. We’re buzzing to find out where the pieces will fall when the series returns on April 12. Until then, it might be helpful to refresh our memories on where we left off before we jump back in.

This is perhaps the biggest thread left unresolved from the last season. Rue (Zendaya) has been through many ups and downs as an addict. We often think she’s hit rock bottom before yet another harrowing downward journey—but losing a suitcase of drugs that she was tasked with selling from drug dealer and retired teacher Laurie (Martha Kelly) was definitely a low point. The second season ends with Rue walking out of East Highland High School ruminating on how Jules was her first real love through a voiceover. She also shares she spent the next year clean while trying to be a good person, after making amends to her friends and family. That’s all nice, but what about the drugs! We’ll have to see how that $10,000 suitcase (plus accumulated interest) will play into the new season, considering the goods were flushed down the toilet by Jules (Hunter Schafer) and Elliot (Dominic Fike).

Remember that intense shoot-out in the finale? A SWAT team raided Fez’s house after finding Mouse’s (Meeko Gattuso) dead body. After presenting that information to Fez, Custer (Tyler Chase) is promptly stabbed in the neck by Ashtray (Javon Walton). Not long after, during the tense raid, Ashtray is shot and killed while Fezco is unable to move, bleeding from his own gunshot wound. We don’t see what happens after that, except we know Fez never made it to Lexi’s (Maude Apatow) play. It’s unlikely we’ll get much of a resolution: Tragically, Cloud passed away from an overdose in 2023.

In the finale, Nate shows up unexpectedly at his father Cal Jacobs’s place, who’s partying with a group of queer folks. We found out a lot about Cal this season, including a heart-wrenching flashback to falling deeply in love with his best friend Derek in high school. Ultimately, Cal decides to marry his pregnant girlfriend instead of his true love, which eats away at him for years afterwards. During this scene, Nate confronts his father on walking out of his life—even if it’s to pursue being his authentic self. Nate confesses that at 11 years old, he found sex tapes of his father sleeping with sex workers in motel rooms. We also know Cal slept with Jules, a high school teenager. After waving around a gun and a USB stick of evidence, the police arrive on the scene to arrest Cal.

Is this fucking play about us? Lexi’s iconic autobiographical play in Euphoria’s finale was not well received by Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), who shows up mad as hell and interrupts the production to yell at her sister. At the same time, Cassie and Maddy have a ton of baggage around both sleeping with Nate at the same time. Remember Cassie and Nate’s secret affair getting interrupted by Maddy banging on the door, at which point Cassie hides in the bathtub? Oh, the memes. That tension had already built up, and by the time we’re at the play itself, Maddy is beating Cassie up on stage, slapping and pulling her hair in front of the whole school. From the trailer, it looks like they’ve fully reconciled, but we’ll see how long that lasts. At least Lexi won—it looks like she’s made it big in Hollywood.

These two characters, although integral to the world of Euphoria, didn’t end the season with as explosive an end to their arcs. Obviously, there was Jules’s love triangle with Rue and Elliot (Dominic Fike), which was the thrust of her storyline. Meanwhile, Kat (Barbie Ferreira) was relatively sidelined, aside from her breakup with Ethan and reckoning with self-love. Sadly, Ferreira will not be returning to Euphoria for its third season.
