A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck in northwestern Nevada on April 13, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake, originally registered as a magnitude 5.7, struck just before 6:30 p.m. PT near the Lahontan State Recreation Area, about 65 miles southeast of Reno. A string of aftershocks followed, with the latest being a magnitude 3.0 that occurred just after 7:20 p.m. PT.

It's too early to assess whether there are any serious damage or injuries.

The USGS's "Did You Feel It" map for the temblor showed that shaking was felt in Reno, Carson City, Lake Tahoe and Truckee, California. The earthquake was classified intensity VII, according to the USGS Shake Map.

Christie Rowe, the director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, told the Reno Gazette-Journal, a part of the USA TODAY Network, it registered as a 5.5 magnitude earthquake, but that could change as they continue to analyze the quake.

"It was felt by a lot of people over a big area, which is kind of exciting," Rowe said.

She said there have been roughly 15 aftershocks in the area, with the biggest so far measuring at magnitude 3.6. Rowe added that more aftershocks are likely and larger earthquakes in the region are possible

Nevada has seen 31 earthquakes of a magnitude 5.0 or greater since 1975, USGS data shows. Of those, 13 were a magnitude 5.5 or greater.
